The Philip Glass Ensemble have released the first ever public recording of the composer’s 1970 work Music in Eight Parts.
Originally written and performed 50 years ago, the manuscript was believed to have been lost until it was rediscovered at Christie’s Auction House in New York in 2017. The Philip Glass Ensemble had been due to play a number of special shows this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the work, but these shows will no longer go ahead as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The group decided instead to record the full piece from their homes and release the results online so that people can hear Music in Eight Parts performed for the first time since its debut. You can listen to it here and watch a trailer for the recording above.
