PREGOBLIN throw out more evidence that they could be one of 2020’s best-loved groups. Brilliant new disco single ‘Anna (Flowers Don’t Grow)’ is the banging follow up to the ‘Combustion’, the single so good, we assumed that it couldn’t be repeated.
The uplifting song – like a warm breeze of new pop and big room disco rolling in from a time when anxiety was merely an abstract concept – belies its roots in concern over mental health via its infectiousness but is actually inspired by the artist Anna McDowell who makes sculptures themed around depression.
Alex Sebley (one half of the group with Jessica Winter) says: "It was first written in Paris while cat sitting after being dumped by my long term partner. Early versions included the line ‘I’ve lost everything this week, except Anna, Anna and her shapes’. The line ‘flowers won’t grow’ is about commitment, belief, perseverance and wanting to patch things up with the person I loved, knowing deep down that it was probably not to be.”
