Cassette Sales In The UK Continue To Rise

Sales of cassettes are at their highest level in over a decade

Cassette sales continued to rise in the UK in the first half of 2019, according to new data released by the British Phonographic Industry.

35,000 cassette sales were recorded between January and June of this month by the BPI, which is almost double the numbers sold in the same six-month period last year. It’s predicted that sales will hit around 75,000 for the year by the end of 2019.

However, reports of a cassette revival may be overstepping the mark at this point, with cassette sales having only accounted for 0.2% of album sales within the data, against the 12% recorded with vinyl.

The biggest-selling cassette album of the year so far has been Billie Eilish’s When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (having released a special cassette edition of the album).
