The first set of acts playing this year’s Unsound festival in Kraków have been announced, with the likes of Sunn O))) and Paula Temple featuring.
Holly Herndon will present her new album, Proto, live at the festival, while there will also be a world premiere collaboration between The Caretaker and visual artist Weirdcore, which draws on the paintings of Ivan Seal (the artist behind The Caretaker’s album covers).
Elsewhere on the line-up, Moor Mother will perform a show called ‘The Great Bailout’ alongside The London Contemporary Orchestra. The performance is described as "a free verse poem that acts as a nonlinear word map about colonialism, slavery and commerce in Great Britain and her commonwealth".
The Necks will team up with Kraków’s Sinfonietta Cracovia and Ilan Volkov to perform together in the Wieliczka Salt Mine, while Sote will present ‘Parallel Persia’, a show that’s described as a "soundtrack for a science-fiction version of Iran".
Other premieres at the festival include Emptyset’s ‘Blossoms’ show which sees them focus on ideas of evolution and adaptation, while JD Twitch will debut a special DJ set dedicated to his label Against Fascism Trax.
Unsound will continue its recently-founded affiliation with Uganda’s Nyege Nyege collective at this year’s event. The festival is inviting Tanzanian singeli artists MCZO & Duke to play, while Jay Mitta will perform in Europe for the first time, alongside Ant Virus.
Objekt is set to present his new live show alongside visual artist Ezra Miller, and Detroit producer Terrence Dixon will make a rare live appearance as Population One.
DJ highlights on the programme include Octo Octa & Eris Drew (playing back-to-back), Almaty’s Nazira, UK footwork and jungle proponents Sherelle & FAUZIA (playing back-to-back), DJ Marcelle and Manara.
This year’s Unsound theme is ‘Solidarity’. The festival takes place across multiple Kraków locations from October 6-13. To check the first line-up announcement in full and find out more, head here. Tickets go on sale on Monday (June 3).
