Mute is lining up the posthumous release of an album by Mark Stewart.
Titled The Fateful Symmetry, the nine-track record was recorded shortly before the artist’s death in April 2023. It’s described in a press release as “a manifesto for a better world” and marks the latest instalment of a long and fruitful connection between Stewart and Daniel Miller’s Mute label.
Best known as co-founder and frontman of The Pop Group, Stewart also collaborated with the likes of Lee “Scratch” Perry, The Bug and Adrian Sherwood, among many others, across his lengthy career. He passed away at the age of 62.
To mark the announcement of The Fateful Symmetry, Mute has shared lead single ‘Memory Of You’, which was co-produced with Killing Joke’s Youth and opens the new album. You can listen to the song below.
“‘Memory Of You’ not only illustrates what a great singer Mark was but what a great writer he was too,” Youth said in a statement. “The melody and lyrics could be from the Walker Brothers or a 50s crooner like [Frank] Sinatra; timeless yet still ahead of the pack.”
Mute will release The Fateful Symmetry on July 11, 2025.
