Spanish-born pianist and composer Nico Casal has spent a number of his recent years as a musician writing soundtracks, most notably for 2016 Oscar-winning short Stutterer.
Now, on the cusp of a more extended release of his own work, Casal has shared a cover of Jon Hopkins’ 2018 track ‘Singularity’, which opened the album of the same name by the producer.
"I’m a big fan of Jon Hopkins and especially the unique way he blends piano and electronics," says Casal. "I always had in mind to do a solo piano cover of one of his songs and ‘Singularity’ inspired me to treat the piano in a slightly different way and explore new sounds and textures."
Casal set out to make it as a full-time musician in 2016 following the Oscar win for Stutterer, for which he plundered his saving into a trip to LA to collect the award. Since then, he hasn’t looked back, setting out to produce his own non-soundtrack project writing from his East London bedroom with a minimal set-up of piano, laptop and microphone, as well as a cheap organ and small synth. Expect to hear more from the pianist soon.
