Patrick Cowley’s Covers of 60s Garage and Soul Tracks to be Explored on New Release

The seven-track 'From Behind' features music recorded by the late artist during his most productive period of 1980-82

US label Dark Entries is lining up another release of archival material by the late producer Patrick Cowley.

From Behind, which spans seven tracks, explores covers that Cowley recorded of a number of 60s garage and soul cuts during one of his most productive periods of output from 1980 until 1982. “As a tripped-out teenage music freak who arrived in 60s San Francisco, it should come as no surprise that these psychedelic sounds, both heady and visceral, infuse Cowley’s oeuvre,” said a press release accompanying the announcement of the record.

Featured on the record are disco-inflected covers of The Doors’ ’20th Century Fox’, The Who’s ‘Shakin’ All Over’, The Moody Blues’ ‘Ride My See Saw’ and The Four Tops’ Motown classic ‘Baby I Need Your Loving’. You can listen to his cover of Loverde’s ‘Iko Iko’, which opens From Behind, below.

A pioneering disco and hi-NRG producer, best known for his collaborations with Sylvester, Cowley passed away from AIDS in 1982 at the age of 32. From Behind is being released to mark what would have been his 74th birthday.

Dark Entries will release From Behind on October 18, 2024.
