Nottingham duo Rattle develop their stripped-back percussive sound on 'Signal' from their as-yet-unreleased second album

Rattle is the rhythm-focused, Nottingham-based duo of Katharine Eira Brown and Theresa Wrigley.

Their tracks place percussion centre-stage with only a maelstrom of drums and Eira Brown’s vocals forming the backbone to their music, as you can hear above via the 11-minute video for ‘Signal’.

The track will feature on their forthcoming second album, Sequence, which follows on from their 2016 debut. The early ideas for the album’s tracks formed while they were on the road supporting Animal Collective in the UK and later The Julie Ruin across Europe.

The duo took the opportunity of these shows to road test new material. "hearing our drums in these larger venues, with amazing sound, made us excited about how beautiful and magic the drums sounded, we were quite spellbound by how they were able to fill a venue so completely," says Eira Brown.

Of ‘Signal’, the track above, specifically, she says: "I had a very distinct image in my mind when writing this song, of being in a clearing in some woods and listening intently to the sounds of the trees and the undergrowth and trying to summon something or someone from that space and trying to connect with something or someone who might be having the same experience, at the same time, somewhere else."

Upset The Rhythm will release Sequence on November 2. You can pre-order it here.
