Berlin Club Watergate to Close at the End of 2024

"With the pressure of rising costs and shifting club culture, this is the only sensible and responsible decision," the club's operating team said

Much-loved Berlin nightclub Watergate is to close at the end of the year after 22 years of operations.

Confirming the decision to bring the venture to an end, a statement shared via Watergate’s Instagram page said: “With a heavy heart, we have decided to end our club operations at Watergate at the end of the year and to not renew our lease. With the pressure of rising costs and shifting club culture, this is the only sensible and responsible decision.”

The club plans to host a series of special “Farewell Watergate” events in the coming months before a final closing party on New Year’s Eve. “The party is over – long live the party,” Watergate’s announcement concluded.

Watergate was opened in October 2002 by Ulrich Wombacher, Steffen Hack and Niklas Eichstädt. Richie Hawtin and Kerri Chandler are among the acts listed to play the venue in the coming months before its closure. In-house label, Watergate Records, will reportedly continue to run following the club’s end.
