Petition To Save Shoreditch Studios Gathers Steam

A number of artists, including Caribou and The Black Madonna, have put their support behind a campaign to save Shoreditch's Strongroom Studios

A petition to save a much-loved studio space in Shoreditch is gathering pace with the likes of Dan Snaith (aka Caribou and Daphni) and The Black Madonna both voicing their support on social media.

Plans to build an office block nearby have triggered the petition with those behind it believing that the development could force the studios’ closure.

"The application to redevelop a small warehouse space into a six-storey office block estimates a continuous construction period of 18+ months,” reads the petition. “Dust and debris from any construction operation near a recording studio would be deleterious, but for something on this large a scale along the adjoining wall to the premises the noise and vibration alone could put the studios completely out of business.”

The Black Madonna shared the petition on Twitter, noting that she had recently recorded her album at the studio space, while Caribou’s last album, Our Love, was also mixed there, as Dan Snaith revealed on Twitter.

Erol Alkan, Leon Vynehall, fabric and Ninja Tune have also taken to social media to lend their support to the campaign to save the studios which originally opened in 1984. The space now features 12 music studios amongst other facilities. It has been used by the likes of Radiohead, Björk and The Chemical Brothers since it opened.

The petition, which you can check out and lend your support to here, is addressed to Hackney Council, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, local MP Diane Abbott and Culture Secretary Matt Hancock amongst others.
