LISTEN: 1970s Minimal Synths From The Magits

Cult label Outer Himmilayan is the subject of a new compilation set for release through Sacred Bones Records and Dark Entries

In 1979 musicians Nick Blinko and Martin Cooper founded the Outer Himmilayan label, going on to release 7" singles from three short-lived bands: S-Haters, Soft Drinks and The Magits.

All three of those bands feature on a new compilation set for a co-release by Sacred Bones Records and Dark Entries, highlighting the first three years of the label and specifically the records released by those three bands. After the release of these records between 1979 and 1982, Outer Himmilayan’s focus shifted to releasing the music of the anarcho band Rudimentary Peni, which Blinko founded.

Above is a rare track from The Magits, a project of Blinko and Cooper, called ‘A Pawn in the Game’. It centres around minimal, off kilter synths and Blinko’s razor-sharp vocals, and dates back to that initial period of activity from the label, but did not feature on The Magits’ sole single for the label, released back in 1979. Rare and unreleased tracks from all three acts feature on the compilation.

Sacred Bones Records and Dark Entries will release Outer Himmilayan Presents on May 25. It can be pre-ordered here.
