This Friday sees Rinse FM team up with our pals at Cairo 100 Copies to bring you a new chaabi anthology, Cairo Calling featuring established names Islam Chipsy and Amr HaHa as well as newcomers DJ Mado and Yehaia El Tonsy. You can listen to an exclusive track ‘Oscuro’ by DJ Ismail above.
London based fans of the Egyptian mahragan sound should be aware that there is also a free party featuring Sadaat, Alaa 50, DJ Sadam, Mahmoud Refat and more on Thursday at Archspace, 339-340 Acton Mews, London and you can sign up for free list here.
And if you’re free tonight the Barbican is showing the Cairo Calling documentary, prefaced by a talk featuring Mahmoud Refat of 100 Copies, Kode 9, Joe Muggs and tQ editor, John Doran. The documentary grew out of a British Council initiative to bring together European electronic producers and the cream of the Egyptian underground such as Sadat, Figo, Dezel and Knka. The even organisers pose the question: to what extent can chaabi or mahraganat be compared to other underground movements such as Grime, Dubstep, Hardcore, Jungle, Juke, Gqom or Kuduro.
And on Saturday, various Egyptian artists involved with Cairo Calling will stage a 12 hour take over at Rinse FM.
