Cult Album From Yasuaki Shimizu To Be Reissued

A cult Japanese jazz fusion album from the 1980s by Yasuaki Shimizu will receive a reissue next month courtesy of Palto Flats and We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records

Following on from their joint venture earlier this year on the reissue of Midori Takada’s Through The Looking Glass, Palto Flats and WRWTFWW Records have reconvened for a reissue of another album that has slowly gathered cult status in recent years.

Yasuaki Shimizu’s 1982 album Kakashi has become highly sought after on the secondary record market with prices soaring on sites like Discogs, and more people discovering the record, as with Takada’s, via YouTube’s suggested video algorithms. You can hear an excerpt of album track ‘Umi No Ue Kara’ above to get a taste of the record.

Shimizu was the bandleader and principal songwriter for Japanese group Mariah, whose Utakata No Hibi album, another cult favourite, was reissued by Palto Flats in 2015, with Kakashi offering a similar blend of saxophone experimentations and jazz fusion to that of Mariah’s album.

Kakashi has been remastered for its reissue and will come with liner notes from Shimizu himself as well as music journalist Patrice Bollon. It will be available from November 24.
