RIP Records have been sharing music from new and undiscovered acts all year through a monthly showcase of singles all leading up to a compilation collecting each track which will be available at the end of the year.
The latest of those singles comes from noisy Glaswegian four-piece Sweaty Palms in the form of ‘Queer Fatwa’, which you can hear above.
The track was recorded at Glasgow’s Green Door Studios, which has also been a studio home to Golden Teacher and numerous other Glasgow-based acts in recent years. The band explain that the track’s title comes from a quote from Jon Ronson’s Them, which is a book that looks at extremism of all kinds, one focus being a Militant leader who threatens to put a Queer Fatwa on Ronson.
"The phrase is hysterical, it’s just not two words you imagine to see together," the band say. "The rest of the song is loosely based around extremism, from Islamist militants to the dirty gringos of the western world."
As RIP Records say, there’s a vein of black humour that runs through much of their work, with the band aiming to channel that alongside lyrics about social anxiety and urban decay amongst other subjects. "We like the balancing of universally appealing with the unappealing," the band say of their sound. "Abrasion."
