Titled Old Speakers, the album is coming out on tape as part of the latest batch release by Mexico City label Umor Rex, previously home to releases by the likes of Kara-Lis Coverdale, Driftmachine, Félicia Atkinson, Siavash Amini, and M. Geddes Gengras to name a few.
Old Speakers has been in the works since Tristan Bath moved to Austria in late 2015, refining the compositions (somewhat accidentally) into a document of the period of personal and international upheaval during which they came to life.
“This is my Brexit album,” he explains, “a document of the dread, quiet chaos, and bitterness in European society which came to the surface in 2016.” Field recordings and improvisations formed the basis of the music, including mountain winds from Upper Austria, a violin furiously scraped on a paranoid evening in South London, rusty ferry engines between Canary Islands, and melodies haphazardly sketched out on lengthy train and coach journeys over the continent.
