A recent feature in our round-up of the best music we missed in September on the site, Frozen Reeds’ release of Julius Eastman’s Femenine has been gathering some much-needed attention of late more than two decades after the composer’s death.
Eastman had passed before many had truly begun to appreciate his work with the composer left homeless and shut out by much of the classical music world. Next month, LCMF, in collaboration with Thirty Three Thirty Three, will host the first European performance of the work at London’s Second Home Holland Park as part of a programme called ‘In Search Of Julius Eastman’.
The series will last four days and will see Apartment House and Elaine Mitchener present rarely heard Eastman works, including Femenine and a later composition called Buddha. There will also be a new Eastman-inspired piece performed by Julianna Huxtable as well as excerpts from Arthur Russell’s ensemble work Tower Of Meaning – Eastman had worked with Russell upon moving to New York in the early 1980s.
