LISTEN: New Xiu Xiu Single

Californian pop experimentalists return; share single from forthcoming new album

With their new upcoming album, Forget, Xiu Xiu appear to be following up their disjointed, noisy and aggressive interpretation of the Twin Peaks soundtrack on Plays The Music Of Twin Peaks with a return to catchy synth-pop.

While it is not without the band’s characteristic love of dread, driven by growling bass and a threatening synthesised glam rock stomp, you can hear some of their latest work for yourself via new single ‘Wondering’ which is premiering above.

The album was produced in part by John Congleton (Blondie, Sigur Ros) and features guest appearances from composer Charlemagne Palestine, Enyce Smith, Swans guitarist Kristof Hahn and drag artist Vaginal Davis. The album’s title, Jamie Stewart says, is about how “[forgetting] uncontrollably embraces the duality of human frailty. It is a rebirth in blanked out renewal but also drowns and mutilates our attempt to hold on to what is dear.”

Forget is set for release on February 24 and can be pre-ordered here.

As an aside to his work in Xiu Xiu, Jamie Stewart has also been working with Lawrence English under the name HEXA, providing an experimental soundtrack to David Lynch’s Factory Photographs series with plans to present their material live once more forthcoming in the new year.
