Detroit: Techno City At The ICA

Exhibition at London's Institute Of Contemporary Arts to dig deep into rich history of Detroit techno

Starting next month, the ICA will host an exhibition devoted to the history of Detroit techno.

Detroit: Techno City will chart the timeline of the music’s development from its very beginning in the late 1970s through to the 1990s when it begins on July 27.

As Resident Advisor reports, the exhibition will explore the genre’s forefathers – Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson – while also taking a look at such seminal figures as Blake Baxter and Eddie Fowlkes. Also at the centre of the exhibition is of course a focus on Underground Resistance and their role in further breaking Detroit techno around the world.

Detroit: Techno City will too explore the relationship between American and European techno, looking at how early DJs and producers inspired a second wave of Detroit techno DJs such as Carl Craig. It runs through to September 25 and will be accompanied by a series of online radio shows on NTS featuring a number of figures from the scene.
