PLAYLIST: Love Cult’s Favourite Current Russian Artists

Ahead of their London show this Friday, the Russian duo recommend 10 acts from their home country

This Friday sees Love Cult, the Russian duo made up of Anya Kuts and Ivan Afanasyev, coming to London for a live show at Shoreditch Church.

Their music drawing heavily on ambient drones, the live show is sure to be captivating and you can get tickets and find out more information on the show here. You can also check out some music from the pair above.

Tomorrow (May 5), the duo will also take part in a Q&A session with The Wire‘s Derek Walmsley at Calvert 22. They will talk about Russia’s underground music scene among other subjects and to book a place for the free event, you just need to head here.

Ahead of that then, we thought it would be a good idea to catch up with the pair to get some quick recommendations on Russia’s underground music scene – you can check that out below.

Moa Pillar

Experimental producer from Moscow mixing epic build-ups, folk motifs, American minimalism and punchy techno into a fucked-up hybrid dance music.

Kedr Livanskiy

Dreamy, lo-fi house with existential pop songs in Russian, absolutely heartbreaking.

Suokas

Experimental, semi-acoustic techno from Karelia, works both for raves and forest walks – and that says A LOT!

Тальник

This one sounds like Hype Williams meeting Vashti Bunyan for a cup of shitty instant coffee.

HMOT

Subtle digital-analogue emotional narratives on top of a 4×4 kick drum, top quality stuff from Siberia.

NV

Faux-Japanese electro-pop that sounds pretty close to Yellow Magic Orchestra but very original.

Lovozero

To our ears this is what Kelela or FKA Twigs would sound like if born and raised in a Russian village.

Buttechno

One of the most original voices in the "lo-fi dance" category, love his sci-fi arps and fried drum beats.

Synecdoche Montauk

Russia’s finest attempt at an "electronic indie band", sounds 1000% more honest than their colleagues.

Tikhie Kamni

Ambient duo comprised of Moa Pillar and Lovozero, pure love of sound.
