CTM To Host Digital Pop Star

Mari Matsutoya to present performance putting to use a digitally rendered celebrity at the Berlin festival in collaboration with Laurel Halo among others

Following the first line-up announcement last month for CTM 2016, the Berlin festival has now confirmed another addition to the line-up.

Artist Mari Matsutoya will present a piece called Still Be Here putting to use the digitally rendered popstar Hatsune Miku, which was launched in 2007 and developed from a vocal synthesiser product into a widely loved cyber celebrity. The project has been created alongside Laurel Halo, choreographer and visual artist Darren Johnston, visual artist LaTurbo Avedon and digital artist Martin Sulzer.

A press release on the performance reads: “In watching the deconstruction of this perfect star, the audience comes to the uncanny realisation that Miku is simply an empty vessel onto which we project our own various fantasies. In this void, the topology of desire within a networked community becomes tangible and Miku becomes an allegory of the commodified female body as governed by corporate regulation and normative social etiquette. The performance critically deconstructs this body and speculates on opportunities to transgress it through means of appropriation.”

CTM 2016 takes place across multiple Berlin venues from January 29 – February 7. The full 2016 programme will be announced in January with acts such as Lena Willikens and Peder Mannerfelt already confirmed. For more information and to get tickets, click here.
