Inga Copeland Announces Solo LP

Former Hype Williams artist announces eight-track, self-released album, which includes a collaboration with Actress

Inga Copeland has announced the release of her debut solo album as copeland. Titled Because I’m Worth It, it features eight new tracks, including a collaborative track with Actress, and will be self-released this May.

Until the duo’s split last year, Copeland was formerly half of one of the most cryptic yet rewarding musical and artistic projects of recent years, Hype Williams. Alongside Dean Blunt, the hazed, foggy pop songs and wired synth sketches they crafted across albums for labels including Hippos In Tanks and Hyperdub were alternately unsettling and deeply moving, capable by turns of both overwhelming physical presence and disarming intimacy. The duo parted ways in 2013, with Blunt going on to release the acclaimed The Redeemer album and its free-to-download follow-up Stone Island last year, while Copeland put out an equally involving six-track free EP Higher Powers and followed it up with a limited, low-key 12" with Gast.

The eight tracks on Because I’m Worth It promise to be no less strange and labyrinthine than her former work, but several possess a more pronounced and direct rhythmic presence, with tracks like ‘Insult 2 Injury’ and Actress collaboration ‘Advice To Young Girls’ emerging slightly from the shroud of reverb and dub effects that cloaked much of Higher Powers into driving, perhaps even club-ready form.

The tracklist for Because I’m Worth It runs as follows:

‘Faith OG X’

‘Advice To Young Girls (w/ Actress)’

‘Insult 2 Injury’

‘Serious’

‘Fit’

‘Diligence’

‘Inga’

‘L’Oreal’
