New video for Byzantine Empire cover; two live shows announced for April

Fan of BBC costume dramas? And shimmering psychedelia? Then cast your eyes thus way to Mary Epworth’s video for her new limited edition single, ‘Snow Queen’, a cover of The Byzantine Empire’s version of the Carole King/Gerry Goffin song. Reminiscent of Sofia Coppola’s gorgeous semi-historical film Marie Antoinette, the video drenches regal Georgian fineries and The Manor in Hemingford Grey, Cambridgeshire in a dreamy colour palette.

Epworth’s original idea for the video, a paean to the titular precipitation, though, was thwarted by Britain’s erratic weather. She says: “When I decided to release ‘Snow Queen’ on milky white vinyl, I thought I would time it perfect to come out just as snow carpeted parts of the UK. Little did I know that this winter would turn out to be so very wet, and not very cold. I must admit I love snow, and in the part of the country where I live, we’ve been spared the worst of the flooding, but we’re still yet to see a snowflake, so when the time came to make a ‘Snow Queen’ video, we all had to think laterally.”

‘Snow Queen’ is out now on 7" vinyl on a limited run of 250 copies via Hand Of Glory, backed with another cover, of ‘Ice and Snow’, originally by Satya Sai Maitreya Kali, aka Craig Smith. Epworth has announced a couple of live shows, at The Lexington in London on April 8 and Ramsgate Music Hall on April 9.
