James Lavelle, producer, DJ, boss of the Mo’Wax label and member of UNKLE, has been announced as the curator for next year’s Meltdown festival.
The appointment will chime with Mo’Wax’s 21st birthday, with Lavelle picking out the artists, acts and installations that will appear at the event, taking place at London’s Southbank Centre from June 13-22 2014.
In a statement, Lavelle says: "I am deeply honoured to have been asked to curate Meltdown 2014. I intend to create a vibrant and exciting collage of counter-culture and collaboration from the worlds of music, film, art and everything in between. I want to bring together my influences from the past, the present and my work as an artist in contemporary society as well as transforming the space in a way that’s never been done before, both artistically and musically. In curating Meltdown I have a responsibility to inspire the next generation of young artists in the same way that I was inspired as a teenager. Together we will push boundaries, shoot for the moon and create something that people will never forget."
DJ Shadow, who worked with Lavelle and Tim Goldsworthy on UNKLE’s debut LP Psyence Fiction, says: "When I first met James, I knew I had found a kindred spirit who could embrace the possibilities of ALL music, not just this genre or that… So when he began to apply this aesthetic to his label, the impact on the cultural landscape of that time was inevitable and profound. I eagerly await the application of his curatorial pastiche to Meltdown!"
