Old Man, Don’t Waste Your Time – Darren Hayman and the Long Parliament from Darren Hayman on Vimeo.
This year, Where It’s At Is Where You Are Records’ singles club takes the form of seven 7"s appearing one at a time on the 7th of each month, and here’s the video for May’s instalment, ‘Old Man, Don’t Waste Your Time’, a prime piece of guitar pop from Darren Hayman And The Long Parliament.
Says Hayman by way of introduction to the track: "I like calling myself old man. Even though there will be a time when I look back at myself at 42 and consider myself to be young. It’s very important to me that as I get older I act with a certain amount of dignity.
"And the most undignified thing I can think of is sweating on a stage and twatting a guitar. Consequently I try my hardest to write music that an old man won’t look too foolish playing.
"Listening to Doctor Feelgood recently made me think of a type of rock and roll that might be ok for old men to play. Doctor Feelgood were young when they made those startling first two albums but they always seemed old.
"I thought this could be a way to write one of my last rock and roll songs, with my sassy 24 year old keyboard player barking at me to give up the ghost and sit in an armchair with a banjo.
"Grubby men’s working club blues played by grey haired men who definitely should know better.
"Old men don’t waste your time. I hope you like it."
