Eccentronic Research Council: London Gig

Band performing 1612 Underture with Maxine Peake in May; new album and cassette label announced

Quietus favourites the Eccentronic Research Council and Maxine Peake have announced their only London gig this year.

The one-off set is at Village Underground on May 17 – get hold of tickets here.

They’ll be heading up a bill which also features Fil OK, Deadstock 33s and Jim Stanton for Noise Of Art’s 100 years of an Art of Noises launch party – for more details head here.

In further ERC news, the band have confirmed that they’ll be recording their next album with Peake this year, as well as starting up a cassette-only label.

Says the band’s Adrian Flanagan: "All being well Maxine will be over to Sheffield next month to voice my next load of ‘tall tales’ before she puts on the wig and robes to start filming the next series of Silk. It works so well with her I can’t really imagine anyone else reading my words and although we can only realistically do stuff in the twilight hours with her, as she is so completely in demand with her day job, those small stolen moments of magic are worth every miserable minute waiting.

"Also, in the interim, Dean [Honer, fellow ERC member] and I have set up a little bespoke cassette label for our curious one-off ERC collaborations and imaginary soundtracks to films never made, called Desolate Spools.

"The first thing we will release is a collaborative project entitled The Dream Catcher Tapes where I have got people from all walks of life – scientists, teachers, actors, documentary makers, writers, art gallery owners and more – to record their dreams for me on tape and the ERC have been soundtracking them. It’s three quarters finished but I think we’ll end up doing a few volumes of them as lots of people want to be involved. It’s been a real honour to soundtrack the very private world of the subconscious."

Ahead of the gig and new album, the ERC have remixed female avant choir Gaggle’s track ‘Hello Spider’, re-titling it ‘Ay Up Spider’ in the process. Get hold of that along with a remix of the 1612 Underture track ‘Her Kind Wicked Sistas’ and a new mixtape at the ERC’s Soundcloud here.

Additionally, Peake will be starring alongside John Simm in The Village on BBC One on Easter Sunday, March 31, at 9pm.
