Crushing genre divisions like they were autumnal twigs, sonic explorer Frisk Frugt’s album, Dansktoppen møder Burkina Faso i det himmelblå rum hvor solen bor, suite (artwork above), is getting its first release outside his native Denmark on November 12 via Exotic Pylon. Have a listen to parts 1 and 2 of the title track below:
As you’ll bear witness to, Frisk Frugt (‘Fresh Fruit’, aka Anders Lauge Meldgaard) enjoys sonic inventiveness as much as sweepingly accurate titles – the album’s title translates as ‘Danish Folk Meets Burkina Faso In The Sky Blue Place That Is The Home Of The Sun Suite’. Originally released via his arts collective Yoyooyoy in Denmark in 2010, the album was the product of Meldgaard meshing Danish folksong with the rhythms and melodies he heard journeying through Mali and Burkina Faso. After its initial release, it was nominated as an album of the year at the By:Larm music conference, Scandinavia’s Mercury equivalent, where we first encountered him – read our review of his sets here.
