Holly Herndon's new album sees her team up with an A.I. 'baby' and an ensemble of vocalists

Holly Herndon is set to release a new album in May. Titled PROTO, the album is preceded by new track 'Eternal' which you can hear above.

PROTO is Herndon's third full-length album and follows on from 2015's Platform. For this record, Herndon assembled an ensemble of vocalists in her base of Berlin, working alongside them as well as her partner Mat Dryhurst, ensemble developer Jules LaPlace, sometime collaborator Jlin and an A.I. 'baby' dubbed Spawn.

"There's a pervasive narrative of technology as dehumanising," says Herndon, speaking about Spawn. "We stand in contrast to that. It's not like we want to run away; we're very much running towards it, but on our terms. Choosing to work with an ensemble of humans is part of our protocol. I don't want to live in a world in which humans are automated off stage. I want an A.I. to be raised to appreciate and interact with that beauty."

'Eternal' follows on from previous track 'Godmother' which was revealed last year and featured Jlin as well as Spawn. 4AD will release PROTO on May 10. It can be pre-ordered here. Catch up on our 2015 interview with Holly Herndon here.
