Cities & Memory launches a new project called Sound Photography

Sound art and field recording project Cities and Memory have launched the biggest ever global collaboration between photographers and sound artists. The project is called Sound Photography. It consists of 120 sound pieces inspired by photography from 34 counties including; Djibouti, Botswana, India, Vietnam and Australia and locations like Tiananmen Square, the Empire State Building and Copacabana Beach.

Cities and memories describes its aim as being “to present and remix the sounds of the world through a global sound map in which every location has two sounds: a documentary field recording and a reimagining of that sound.”

With over 166 participants this collection asks the question “what is the connection between sound and photography?” It also uses a whole manner of unique creative approaches such as using the raw data from a photograph to construct brand new sounds and using elements of the image as musical notation from which to build new melodies.

Previous Cities and Memories projects have explored the sonics of protest and sacred spaces. The Sound Photography incarnation launches on Monday 15 May and can be viewed in full here .
