Brad Mehldau Trio - The Art Of Trio Vol. 1
Another musician that has a lot of consciousness in his playing – I'd recommend Richie Birac in this area too, who nobody seems to know very well. Brad Mehldau does versions of other people's songs, like The Beatles and Richard Rodgers and Radiohead, but brings them alive in a different way when he plays them. I've always loved the piano – it's an instrument that speaks to me, it's makes a very human sound. And I've also always loved jazz piano, Bill Evans being the greatest of course. I play this when I'm at home – it's easy going, understandable, melodic, thoughtful – and it has this intellectual, emotional approach. There's nothing wrong with music being those things. Music should help soothe your soul.
