The Pretenders - Learning To Crawl
This was the first time I saw a woman in a different role. Here she was leading the band with an electric guitar – one of the boys. We have very different ways of singing – she has this incredible control but she was one of the guys and she was also stronger than all of them combined. It was a real eye opener. It's not that they're not good, she just runs the show in such a major, major way – it's incredible to watch. The combination of her guitar playing and singing at the same time. You don't get to see that so much. I think she really touches on womanhood but in this really tough way, in a way that is sometimes really underrepresented. I think it is really great to recognise all these different ways of being [a woman] and so I appreciate that with her.
