Johnny Marr: The Smiths Almost Reunited in 2008
Christian Eede , October 31st, 2016 16:22

Marr had spoken with Morrissey in 2008 about the potentiality of a reunion of the band but it never materialised

Johnny Marr is soon set to release his memoir, Set The Boy Free, and shared an excerpt of the memoir recently with The Guardian.

The excerpt reveals that Marr held talks with Morrissey in 2008 about the possibility of The Smiths reuniting, having sent a text to Morrissey and Andy Rourke in the process of remastering their material saying: "you can really hear the love in it". Marr and Morrissey met in a Manchester pub in September of that year, and during that time they "spoke about the possibility of the band reforming".

Marr says it looked very possible to happen for a short while with him even telling The Cribs, with whom he was touring as part of at the time, that he may play some The Smiths shows. He stayed in contact with Morrissey after the meeting and they had planned to meet up again, but when Marr went on tour to Mexico with The Cribs, contact was lost. "Our communication ended, and things went back to how they were and how I expect they always will be," Marr says.

Set The Boy Free is out on November 15 via HarperCollins imprint Dey Street Books.
