Film to accompany synthesists' new Pacific Ocean-inspired ambient record

One of the finest album's you're likely to hear this year, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith & Suzanne Ciani's Sunergy, hit the shelves today, and to mark its release, take a look at this documentary about its making. Directed by Sean Hellfritsch it sits footage of the two synthesists at work alongside shots of the Pacific coast near Ciani's studio in Bolinas, California, where the album was recorded. Says Hellfritsch: "The music of Sunergy is an ode to the sun and the sea, so I thought it natural to look to those elements for my inspiration as well. I took a camera to the intertidal zone of Duxbury Reef and was very fortunate to find it in such a dynamic state. As I was shooting I could see the sounds of Kaitlyn and Suzanne's synths dancing in the water and light."

The album, as Ciani told us, fufils her long-held hope of "orchestrating the sunrise": "My studio is right on the ocean, and the sun rises right in my eyes every morning, and the energy of the sea is right there. I think for me, I had a long-standing desire to orchestrate the sunrise, and never came up with the right thing on piano. So at a certain moment, I had the revelation that the whole thing would be electronic, not traditional acoustic."

The album's out now on Rvng Intl. – get hold of it via Smith's Bandcamp – and read our review of it here.
