The Last Poets - The Last Poets
I was a John Peel listener like anyone who had any taste, any lonely soul - there were a lot of us and it was great when we all got together. He played this. I'd never heard anything like it. It was around that period after the Mexico Olympics and the Black Power protest and to this day, surely, this must be the first hip-hop record, not in terms of its music composition but in terms of the content. Everything is there. It is supreme. I wanted to know more about it, so I went out and bought some books - Soul On Ice, Seize The Time, all those things. That's really powerful. John was never quite as bumbling as he liked people to think.

GREAT list-- great artist/musician-- and the Klara Lewis album is really good, even if she is... Graham's daughter. All of Graham's solo albums-- not including myriad with Bruce Gilbert, which are great things themselves-- are estimble in weird and wondrous ways. He even killed on a cover of "Suzanne," which ain't easy--

In the Top 5 all-time Baker's Dozens, accept no less. (Worst BD has to be Butch Vig always.)

"What was the most disappointing gig you ever went to of someone you really liked?"

I was amused to see this pop up as the answer for me is Wire, at the South Bank 10 years or so ago. They were playing their old stuff, maybe they were bored - certainly they've made good records since. Nice list with lots of enthusiasm.
