For better or worse every music publication is essentially summed up by its Albums Of The Year chart. As soon as a magazine or website publishes its AOTY list it suddenly doesn’t matter what its editorial stance has been during the preceding 11 or 12 months - its aesthetic is only then cemented in place for the following year. All of those think pieces on international outlier trends and avant-garde underground movements will count for little in terms of popular perception if a website’s got The War On Drugs’ Lost In The Dream as their number one album. Of course, the same applies to The Quietus and, as always, we’re happy about this because in terms of content, we think our list is excellent. This is definitely a reflection of how simple we keep our AOTY list procedure. We take votes from everyone who works in the office (Luke Turner, Laurie Tuffrey, Sophie Coletta and myself) based purely on which albums we’ve listened to the most during the year.

But we do hope that our regular readers love the chart as much as we do - the avalanche of complaints about the lack of Hookworms, Run The Jewels II and Pallbearer that we’re about to be engulfed by notwithstanding. And, no word of a lie, I really really hope that people new to the site get something out of it as well. While writing this introduction each year however, I have the odd sensation that this is what a parish priest feels like when penning a sermon for Christmas Day - knowing that he’s addressing a congregation unusually swollen in numbers - many of whom he’s unlikely to see for another 365 days; all of them no doubt, very keen to get back home as soon as humanly possible for a sherry and a mince pie. Because of this I always feel that maybe I should be writing welcoming things and accentuating the positive so as to gently encourage people to attend the site more regularly in the future.

However the first thing that struck me about this list when I compiled it last week was something negative and rather than taking my normal course of action (stressing out about it in private to Luke until I have a panic attack) I thought I’d mention it here. Run your eye down the list of all the bylines with the capsule reviews under each of the hundred choices… it’s a right sausage fest isn’t it?

We do have plenty of excellent female writers but they tend to favour feature writing over reviewing for the most part. So if you’re a woman and reading this and you’d always fancied writing about music please drop us a line - we’d love to hear from you. (Write to and and one of us will get back to you.) Tell us a bit about yourself, send an example of your writing - doesn’t need to have been published anywhere; we’re more interested in your chops than your experience - and then we’ll explain the woeful pay situation. (No one gets a living wage from The Quietus - a fully independent publication with no financial backing - not even Luke and I but we did pay for a sizeable percentage of copy we ran in the second half of this year and our ultimate goal is to be paying for absolutely everything in the next few years.) The only time we’ve ever seen a readership analysis, we were pleasantly surprised to find out that there’s a near 50/50 male/female distribution among our readers and I’m pretty sure few other music titles can boast that. An obvious way for us to try and maintain this balance is not just to write about more female artists but ensure there are more female voices on the site full stop.

As for female artists in the actual chart, I think the picture’s somewhat healthier. About one third of the acts featured are female artists, female bands or groups featuring prominent female musicians. I met up with the member of the PRS Foundation responsible for investigating women’s professional involvement in music recently and she said that out of all of their hundreds of thousands of members, only 14% were female. That figure is shocking no matter how you cut it and questions need to be asked about how this cultural situation has developed (or dragged on as the case is more likely to be) and more importantly, what can be done about it.

When listing my own favourite LPs recently it was near impossible to choose my number two album this year. I really felt that there was barely anything in terms of sheer enjoyability and quality separating Jane Weaver’s The Silver Globe, Katie Gately’s Pipes, Cooly G’s Wait Til Night, Scott Walker and Sunn O)))’s Soused, Swans’ To Be Kind, The Bug’s Angels & Devils, Preternaturals by Grumbling Fur, Total Strife Forever by East India Youth and Manic Street Preachers’ Futurology. These are all albums that I’ve had on constant repeat since receiving them and none of them show any sign of loosening their grip on me. However there was one album that managed to stand head and shoulders above even these formidable artifacts and that was UNFLESH by Gazelle Twin - a staggeringly good piece of work.

Elizabeth Bernholz, aka Gazelle Twin, is an artist for our times. She takes body dysmorphia, personality dysphoria, the rage felt against disempowerment, the echoes of angry teenage revenge fantasies, nameless but debilitating modern illnesses, hellish hallucinations and converts them to a convincing and overpowering sonic art. Focussing industrial, hip hop and techno influences into an electronic pop LP - the follow-up to 2011's The Entire City - Bernholz has stepped out of the shadow of her youthful influences (The Knife, Fever Ray, John Foxx) and produced something startlingly original. I don't personally believe in genius but I am always in awe of persistence and singularity of vision - which is something she has in spades.

But for me, all of the albums in the top 40 (and many outside of it) are outstanding artistic statements and in some respects it’s a shame we even have to rank them - a crass and unreliable way of recording an album’s worth. Instead, taken as a whole I find the contents of this chart are one hundred really good reasons for me to bother getting out of bed in the morning. It rams it home that no matter what chants of doom and gloom we’re hearing from some quarters, modern music is actually in vividly rude health, especially if you’re willing to look further afield and outside of the traditional label and PR distribution networks.

We understand that these lists are taken very seriously by a lot of music fans and we expect to receive a reasonable amount of flak for not including LPs that mean the world to other people. Please leave your own lists in the comment feature below but be aware that if you have a genuinely missionary zeal for an artist and want us to listen to them with a view to featuring them on the site in future, we’re much more likely to respond favourably to a post where we don’t get referred to as a bunch of gibbering halfwits or what have you. The two main complaints about this chart can usually be summed up like this: one, you lot are so obvious, I could have predicted this chart exactly and two, you lot are so pretentious, I haven't heard of any of these artists. To which I say: one, well please educate us by leaving a list of albums you feel should have been included below and two, well, yes obviously; Luke collects antique brass shoe horns and I'm just about to go on the radio and read poetry about black holes with modular synthesiser drone backing. Of course we're pretentious. That doesn't mean we're wrong though...

Essentially this chart has one aim however. And that can be summed up thus: I hope you find one or more albums from this list which bring you great pleasure now and in the future. And finally, as you probably know, The Quietus likes to spend most of the money that we don't use on rent and tea on great round slabs of vinyl. We know that you, our dear readers, also like to do the same. Therefore, as our entirely subjective and totally reductive albums of the year list is essentially a buyers guide to the best records that you might not have heard of elsewhere, we've always wanted to make it easy for you to part with hard currency in order to support artists and record labels. If [Black Rain's] archival recordings stand up to time surprisingly well after nearly 20 years, Argabright's absorption of influences since their release and his ability to roll them neatly into his own ideas is impressive, and his voice remains very much his own.     "The studio project of Alex Figueira, a Portuguese-Venezualan producer based in Amsterdam, Fumaça Preta ('black smoke') offer a cracked Latin American psychedelia that jives to the wiggier end of Tropicalia – Os Mutantes, Tom Ze – while drinking deep from the Butthole Surfers' manky goblet of insanity. Figueira yells and cackles through a prism of reverb and echo, while tripped-out percussion and distorted saxophones drift in and out of a hallucinatory mix.     "The basis for this album was a long period of automatic writing; the text she was creating being mainly dictated by the way the words sounded, not what they meant. She then learned the entire text - and how it was to be pronounced - by heart by employing mnemonic means, creating a narrative of sorts. Then she used various digital vocal manipulation techniques to distinguish between different characters she was giving voice to. There is a dense textural and imagistic inter-connectivity between all the songs and their attendant films; with the whole experience being, by turns, psychedelic, funny, disconcerting, brain warping and really enjoyable."   • "St. Vincent's eponymous title, coming as it does after Annie Clark's three prior solo albums and her collaboration with David Byrne, implies that the record will be a clear statement of intent. Fittingly enough for an artist with near-legendary creative control over her output, the title was a very deliberate decision. 'I was reading Miles Davis' autobiography,' she recently told Paste, 'and he talks about how the hardest thing for any musician to do is to sound like himself … and that's why I decided to self-title this record because I feel like I sound like myself.'"   • "Edwards' all-analogue set-up and use of cheap, DIY units and four-track recorders gives his music a pleasing authenticity. There is a murky, mouldering gloom and paranoia that pervades much of Unfidelity. It's Artificial Intelligence-era Warp remodelled for dank basements and smoke-filled squats, especially on the opener 'Trace Elements', which recalls the alien oddness of Richard D.     "An intensely close listen to Norwegian guitarist Stein Urheim’s excellent self-titled album reveals some surprising sonic detail and casts you in the role of a TV detective savant listening to the recording of a crucial phone call for sonic clues in the background. Concentrate and you can hear the natural rhythm of rain falling on wooden beams and slate roof tiles of the house it was recorded in and even a boat chugging past some distance deep in the background."   • "As much as Mess is a drive further across electronic borders Liars explored in 2012 with WIXIW, it is simultaneously a consolidation of all that has come before. Many have been quick to point out WIXIW's 'Brats' as a lead in point to the chapter that follows here, but it perhaps equally pertinent to suggest there is a thread that leads much deeper into Liars' history: the guttural aggression that lined They Threw Us In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top, or the rhythmic intensity of Drum's Not Dead." When I eat my once-yearly Cadbury's Cream Egg I expect the sugar content to make me feel dizzy and I'd be irked if it didn't. And similarly, when I hear a new Shellac record I expect it to kick me in my imaginary balls. I expect it to deposit tape-worm larvae in my bowels, which become long, segmented adults invading my eyes with hundreds of cysts. I do not expect an organ solo or some chirpy soundscape. They don't play fast, but they're focused; there's a level of intensity in their music that's more befitting of metal than any sort of pop. In a genre where many singers try to become "just another instrument", Herring is a true frontman; charismatic, theatrical, and willing to give as much as you're willing to take. The record's accompanying booklet highlights this, with its shots of dancers and musicians pushing to the foreground the celebratory and theatrical elements of the group's music. The subject matter of the songs is moral in tone, extolling the virtues of hard work and tradition. Overt political commentary is side-lined, though this reviewer did baulk at a linear note, an unattributed quote, for the title track, 'developed countries didn't become rich just by chance but through hard work'. It is not the place of this music review to offer commentary on this opinion, but it is worth noting as it gives an indication that some aspects of the Kasai Allstars do not chime neatly with the positivist, punk-rock or post-colonial narrative that music criticism often invokes to describe them."   • "On the cover of Bestial Burden, her second album as Pharmakon, the American noise musician Margaret Chardiet is shown with her body weighed down by various pieces of animal meat and offal. On one level this image is an arresting visual depiction of the album's title, with Chardiet's fingers clawing away at the ribs and flesh placed uncomfortably on top of her. On a deeper level, it sums up the album's themes of pity, terror and abjection. The image of an animal's carcass and innards lying on the body refers directly to the work of the Austrian performance artist and painter Hermann Nitsch, the last remaining active member of the Viennese Actionist movement. Many of Nitsch's actions incorporate the ritual evisceration of cows, pigs and lambs, followed by the laying on and covering of the naked human body with the bloody parts of the disembowelled animal. As Nitsch wrote: 'Flesh, viewed as a living body, reveals itself as a Rubenesque opulent vitality; if dissected, it shows itself to be raw meat, as exposed organ, the prey of man the predator.'" Chris Michael Shaheen's drums and Bashar Faran's bass hold down slowed Chaabi rhythms over which Alaa 50's pitch-shifted, at-times aqueous, vocals set up a drone which gets flecked with Bishop's saxophone, a discordant assault that wanders between the stereo channels."

Instead, little nuggets of disinformation were disseminated. The duo claimed to be 'former garage producers who decided to make techno', and before long the message boards were alight with amateur sleuthery. Without constantly communing with the instruments, the objects, the things that surprise you over and over again, this kind of sensitivity for the sound doesn't have any chance to evolve. It is why often when I'm inventing lyrics, songs or even playing at home for the sake of playing alone, I play the guitar which each time is tuned differently. Every time I try to do something, so I can't rely on the tested features, because they just won't work on this particular tuning. Often I operate on open tunings. In fact, every open tuning creates a distinct chord and its specific features can not be translated – but of course you can always try to - from one open tuning to the other. What is most interesting for me is the fact that it creates new harmonic opportunities - the combination of sounds that allow you to do something new every time you come to the instrument with an attitude of openness."   • "The most startling moment on Meshes Of Voice occurs in the space between two songs. The exchange takes place towards the end of 'Thirst That Resembles Me', a live adaptation of an of a spectral song that appears on Jenny Hval's terrifying folk flick Viscera, and the beginning of 'I Have A Darkness', a fucked and distorted response to the former that surveys noise like rubble and picks out remnants of Susanna's sonorous vocals. A sound that resembles a wind tunnel begins to filter through the song, blowing behind Hval's vocals. Susanna then takes over, interrupting her collaborator's high flying octave by uttering nothing but the word "darkness" – as if by simply intoning this one, emptying word, she can put out a flame. The transition couldn't be any more seamless – they're in the same place, Hval and Susanna, the wind blowing steadily behind them – but when Susanna sings, it's as if Hval completely disappears."     when posting a list of 'best albums of 2014' as an apparently independent publication, don't you think it's bad / unethical journalism to put an album on your own label in the top 10 and not make that clear? even the label name is abbreviated. fair enough regular tQ readers might know it's one of yours but this'll be linked to from all over and i think it's rather lamentable that you haven't highlighted the rather obvious conflict of interest.

    having said that, i'm off to give it a listen now, so it'd better be good.

    Currently having my mind blown to pieces by the Gazelle Twin album - beating myself up for waiting so long to listen to it. Anyway, the list has already done its job for these ears.

    Not really a conflict of interest as the Grumbling Fur album is fucking superb and deserves its place, regardless of who put it out.

    er.. it's fairly obvious isn't it? as i said, you're an 'independent' music website compiling a best of 2014 list and a record released by the quietus phonographic collection is at number 6 in it, although it's not made clear. it's the same as if the guardian were doing a 'best 100 books of 2014' and happened to be publishing one of the top 10 themselves but not making it clear to readers.. same as the sun (prop: r murdoch) reviewing 20th century fox films (prop: r murdoch) favourably and not mentioning their shared interest, or plugging sky tv without mentioning the same. if you can't see the inherent dodginess in that then i don't know how to make it any clearer, i'm afraid.

    and again - not that it's not a good album, i'm sure, and not that this isn't a good list, i just think you ought to make it clear(er) that you released one of the records in your top 10 yourselves.

    TQPC is the name of our record label - we're not hiding anything. There are no less than 20 features on the site talking about how we signed the group and put this record label out. Because of the way short run, independent record label deals work and the 50/50 deal we do with everyone we sign - our best case scenario after publicity and promotion is that we will break even. So, excuse me if I laugh myself hoarse at your comparison to Rupert Murdoch, Fox and The Sun. And if you think we're being underhand why not write a blog about how evil we are or report us to your local ombudsman or something, you daft happorth.

    I agree there was a conflict of interest with putting their own album in there. And this list was cynically released on the same day that David Cameron's donor/home/lobbying scandal has broken to bury the fact. This list is clearly the biggest corruption story of the day.

    I for one love the fact that the Quietus's top 100 and the 60+ albums I've really dug this year have so little overlap (maybe eight albums). Similarly, virtually all the inevitable 'Where the hell is...?' comments are lamenting the omission of albums that I've never heard of. It suggests that it's really fertile and fractured out there. Consensus is dead, at last. Good thing, too.

    It's been a great year for music, and I look forward to discovering some more via this list.

    Having said all that, no Babymetal? Really? YOU INHUMAN MONSTERS.

Firstly - as I referenced in the Editor's intro, I'm completely immune to Pallbearer's charms, it's the terrible vocals and secondly: don't forget there's more than one person voting so the chart is NOT supposed to provide an accurate ranking for which artist is better than another because that's not how charts work. It simply means more people prefer Electric Wizard to, say, Godflesh in our office. It's better to take the chart as an entirety and see if it introduces you to music you haven't heard yet. I personally feel a little bit sorry for people who cruise round these lists simply looking to have their own taste in music approved by a secondary source. That's not what it's designed for. We want to introduce people to new music… and it's as simple as that.

    This is probably the first year I've had quite a few albums in my own top 20 that I thought may have had a bit of a crossover with The Quietus list but, alas, no Loscil, Bremen or Anjou in the list (IMO three brilliant ambient/drone/post-rock records). My other personal faves are Woods, St Vincent and Damien Jurado - the latter whose album has perhaps been a victim of a January release, and appears to be have been overlooked. A once rootsy strummer now brilliantly trying his hand at desert psyche-pop. A really great record. I love Wild Beasts but I'm quite pleased in a way at the low ranking because I think it's easily their worst album. The sound of a band disappearing up its own arse sadly.

    Surprises --> I would have thought Mirel Wagner, The Soft Walls & The Pheromoans would have made an appearance somewhere
    Only because they have put out fantastic albums and I have a vague recollection of discovering each artist via this website

    It can get a bit anal to bang on about the 2013/2014 overlap but I'm pretty sure that Katie Gately featured in your end of year round up last year. No complaints though if it gets a few more listeners for Gately herself and the Blue Tapes label (I personally prefer the Tashi Dorji release).

    Personal favourite --> Primitive Motion's 'World Floating By' would be my slightly obscure pick of your misses

    Dear tQ head honchos, I love your end of year lists and look forward to them every December. Until very recently I was still using the 2013 picks to try things I hadn't heard of! I'm sure I'll never be able to digest it all, but thanks a lot for the gluttonous feast of musical food for thought. Despite checking tQ regularly all year and trying to keep up, I've only spent a good amount of time with about 20 of the 100 here. So this should sort me out until 2015...

    I've only heard the Aphex Twin, St Vincent & half the Ronika LPs through EPs but from the distilled written summaries I'd love to hear at least a quarter of this list including the top 5. Being that a Rough Trade just opened in my hometown & music is more easily attainable than ever online this is pretty inexcusable on my part (hangs head shamefully).

    Alas in being one of the few comments not to moan or berate about what's absent, I wish to congratulate the Quietus once again. You guys always manage to seek out the genre-pushing, expectation-defying underpromoted underground sounds unlike most of the rest of the digital music press (didn't mean this to rhyme) whilst being vitally aware of gender balance.

    It always tickles me to read John's pre-amble hoping in vain to dispel the commentors who fail to read his blurb before speculating why tQ are wilfully obscure/po-faced/pedalling an agenda etc.

    May i sign off by asking what happens if a new LP comes along & blows all your balls off in awe over the next month?

    Also any chance of a best christmas albums article or is that too much of a contradiction?

    My personal AOTY is ‘If you scream like that, your monkey won’t come’ by Dutch band Space Siren. This is because bandleader Corno Zwetsloot died last week. Not that I knew him very well, but it was someone whom I respected very much. Apart from being great on guitar Zwetsloot was a prolific producer of Dutch underground-guitar music records, and therefore an important figure of ‘the scene’. He played concerts as long as his ill body let him do so: only two months ago I saw Space Siren play their very last (and f*cking brilliant) gig in Haarlem, on a double bill with The Ex. Of course 'If you scream...’ doesn’t beat albums by Scottt Walker or Swans, but it’s pretty marvellous in its own right. Starting off with a dreamy song that could have fitted on Pinkunoizu’s The Drop, it soons delves into heavier noise and shoegaze territories. You can listen to it here:

    I think these guys made it pretty clear that these are the albums the listened to most. Period. Of course they're not gonna match your taste. The guys were not even trying to match anyone's taste. So, please, would you just stop saying "I can't believe such and such are not on the list" or "This or that album should be higher than this or that album"? That is not the point of a list: the point is you can get to know music you didn't. So have fun discovering new music and stop wondering why the world is not exactly YOUR world. Why should it anyways?

    I'm surprised Ought's album didn't make this list, albeit I don't think The Quietus reviewed it. Do you only put things in that you've reviewed at some point?

    That said, over the past few years I've found TQ's end of year list has introduced me to more music than any other publication, even though I think you overlook "black" music a little bit. Looking forward to working my way through this.

    What no Sleaford Mods?!? It was nowhere in the Piccadilly Records top 100 either and while I don't base my self-worth (entirely) on albums that I love appearing in other people's lists of albums wot they love, I think it's a huge shame that the impact they had on so many people's year hasn't been recorded for posterity. I know they're in the NME Top Ten but it's not quite the same, is it?

    Maybe they're in the Hip-Hop list.

    Wow. Only 3 of my favourite records made the list, and even they weren't my most preferred. There's a lot of decent/alright stuff like Andy Stott, Lee Gamble, Bing and Ruth, Lorenzo Senni, FKA Twigs, Cut Hands, Kassem Mosse, Black Rain etc but I'm surprised by how little overlap there is with my most loved records. From your list, Objekt, Perc, The Bug, Aphex Twin, Actress were the year's big disappointments for me, average at best.
    Anyway there are about 8 great albums released this year for me (that number will probably increase as some of the good albums are borderline great):

    The point of putting Pipes in this list is very simple… it is an astounding track and we were dismayed to find out that at the end of lsat year less than 100 copies of it had been sold. I would break any rules I could in order to introduce more people to this wonderful artist. I don't care that it's not an album, that it came out on cassette and that it came out in 2013… the bottom line is it's wonderful music that people need in their lives and I simply will not stop going on about it until this happens.

    Excellent, excellent list. My only complaint is that I've listened to the #1 album already. ;-) Last year, I discovered Grumbling Fur and have loved them since. But there's a lot of new music to listen to in here.

    VERY VERY happy that 'Meshes of Voice' is in the top 10. It's so fantastic.

    One album I think y'all should check out is Dutch group House of Cosy Cushions' album 'Spell'. It's very dreamy and you might enjoy it. There's some others, too. Federico Albanese, Franz Kirmann, and Hiss Tracts

    This list is particularly important to me this year. I've been writing about music independently for the past 3 or 4 years, alas recently the time to sit down, listen to thoroughly and review a record has more or less completely escaped me. I'm so much more out of the loop with excellent new music that it's refreshing to see not only that some of my favourites from this year have made the list, but there's so much I haven't heard. I still haven't decided if I'll publish an albums of the year list (again, it the time thing). However, having spent years trying to put a science of design behind the way I compile the chart every year, your attitude towards compiling it is much more sensible. So going on that basis, and listing the albums in the order I've listened to the most, here goes:

    Dear Mr Doran and The Quietus,

    In future, avoid accusations of 'conflict of interest' re: 'East India Youth-signed to your label-making your end of year best ofgate' (I'm working on a pithier 'gate') by only signing bands that you hate. This would negate the possibility of you liking them A LOT and having to reflect this by including them in a list of music that you like A LOT. For instance, I'm in a band called Mumsnet and Sons, we play banjos and one of us hits a box with his hands, which makes us stamp our feet in time with the sound of the noise coming from the box, it's a lot of fun but our songs deal with issues around colic and lactose intolerance in the under twos, so it's not without 'edge'. Our new album is called Babybel. You'd hate it, we'd never make an end of year best of (well, maybe Q Magazine). We could be just what you're not looking for.

    On a separate note, I would like to thank you for introducing me to Nissenmondai, Jane Weaver and Liminanas this year. They've been a joy. Thank you. X

    Personally, I'm glad that The Quietus and other music publications, like The Wire, take an obscurantist approach to these end-of-year lists. It's a refreshing change from the standard echo chamber and means I end up listening to lots of brilliant new music over the Christmas period (when I tend to have more time on my hands).

    Leaving out Sun Kil Moon's Benji does seem an egregious omission though (sorry, had to mention it).

    Great list as always, of course there's stuff I think should be in there and stuff you've put in there I don't quite get but on the whole you are the most reliably brilliant source of excellent journalism and great music.

    As much as I enjoyed this list, I have to agree there's a conflict of interest here. I'm sure you guys legitimately loved the Grumbling Fur album, but even if you're not expecting it to turn a profit, the fact remains that you had a financial incentive to include it here. That's a conflict of interest, and the letters TQPC alone don't make that clear.

    Why not add a line saying something like, "Full Disclosure: This album was released on our own label, the Quietus Phonographic Corporation."

    I don't think anyone's accusing you of malicious intent here, but it sets a bad precedent if you're not upfront about issues of this nature.

    In general terms I think you're over reacting. Completely. However, having given it a lot of thought today, I've come to the conclusion that it's literally no skin off my nose to bend over backwards to make sure that even the most casual reader of the Quietus doesn't miss the fact that we occasionally put out very small interest records that we really like. So, yeah, in future I'll put a disclaimer on the blurb next time… if there is a next time. And as for this time, well I think the tedious amount of comments calling us out on this utter nonsense will serve in this instance. And I hope that settles that.

    Having said that, I really don't understand critics' aversion to Ben Frost. Maybe his music is too abrasive or maybe the dude's pretentiousness rubs people the wrong way, I really don't know. All I know is, for anyone with an open mind and a decent pair of headphones/speakers, you cannot argue that AURORA wasn't one of the landmark releases of 2014. While Andy Stott and Tim Hecker (deservedly) get a ton of recognition for their forward-thinking music, Frost continues to be left in the dust. Maybe the guy is just ahead of his time.

Each publications lists are different and while I just discovered you guys a couple of months ago your selections seen to reflect the tone of your page which is thoughtful, intelligent and exploratory.     1) lots of people will come here without being particularly regular tQ readers

    2) it's not immediately obvious that TQPC is your own record label

    3) it's therefore not immediately obvious that one of your own albums is in your top 100

    Great list. Some really magic, unheard of stuff for me to get stuck into as a result too.

    I find the whole conflict of interest thing very odd. The whole article is prefaced by a revelation that the tQ is an operation that is not even able to pull living wage for its staff. Plus you've only got to read the content semi-regularly to see it's quite clearly a publication that values honesty and transparency. Therefore, i think it's pretty certain to say that that GF record would have been listed at the same number in the top 100 whether or not they had put it out. The link to purchase the thing is still to Norman records, were another, separate, independent organisation will stand to benefit from that purchase should you decide to do so (they could have set-up a direct mail order from themselves if they were really being that sinister - and even then it wouldn't have been that sinister). Seems like a rather daft attack to me when we are living in times where multiple music publications write about bands favourably because their advertisers/sponsors have vested interests in them and make it part of their agreement terms, yet a publication who loves a record/band so and wants to put it out for the world to hear is then criticised because it says it's one of their favourite albums of the year in their round-up.

    John, the Pipes tape sounds really good. Based on the description you might like this.

    A 480 is a collection of repetitive, process-oriented virtual signal process pieces rendered entirely in the digital sphere. The pieces consist of originally composed, data rendered sample sources.

    A 480 are vocal pieces. All the sounds are sourced from the 'voice,' and in-so-doing confronting the nature of the voice in the age of data. The virtual choirs are convoluted versions of actual recorded singers that have been unpersonally sourced then disembodied, disfigured, and displaced over forty times, finally reappearing here through a convoluted process of digital reincarnation. Hopefully this work is not their final destination.

    The voices are curationally divided into short loops of different lengths in an audio loop program and played at different speeds across 4 different channels. Slight temporal variations fade in and out over time in constant flux, occasionally pausing for immersion in a pulse chamber, before it moves onto another. The length of the looped samples are adjusted one at a time— lengthened and shortened, and at times switched out altogether, to reveal how seemingly minute temporal variations have impactful effects on overarching rhythm, melody, and energy.

    Because of their evolutionary nature, the way they unfold and morph over long stretches of time, they have the capacity to be passive pieces of music that are environmental in function, though attentive listens reveal formal artifice expressed through carefully composed harmonic narratives and unique expressions of compressed melodic counterpoint.

    Do you have any concrete examples of music publications providing favorable coverage because of advertisers' demands? I don't doubt that it's happened, I'm just genuinely curious who specifically has been guilty of that.

    Again, nobody is claiming this was an evil moneymaking scheme on tQ's part. But if, as you say, they value honesty and transparency, why not be completely transparent about the vested interest here?

    I bought the Grumbling Fur album the day it came out because I really wanted to support the label. And as someone who would love to see TQPC become a big, successful label putting out a ton of great releases every year, I just think there should be a clear policy of transparency in place for situations like this. And it looks like we have that now, so I'll stop.

    Otherwise I'm really enjoying this list. Keep up the good work, tQ.

    The news is that no one in the office likes the album so no one voted for it. That is how the voting process works. I have tried and tried and tried with the Twilight Sad but really look dimly on showy, angst ridden, lager sodden, navel gazing emo and post rock. Personally speaking I suffer from really bad clinically diagnosed depression (both clinical and bi-polar) and that it makes me ultra-senstive to what I consider to be self-indulgent over-emoting in rock music. Whichever - it's simply not for me… far too bombastic and weirdly sensitive thug/macho… however I respect anyone else's right to identify with it and enjoy it. We'd never commission a bad Twilight Sad review or feature and always try and get fans to write about it for us us as they're obviously passionate, dedicated guys… IT"S JUST NOT FOR US.     It's interesting, after browsing this list and sampling some of the music, how you realize that the UK is like girls and the US is like boys, and how girls are wonderful in every sense but the one thing so few of them manage is to be cool, and boys can be nerds or dorks but they can also be really cool, and that's the USA, and the UK is just as interesting, but never cool, so this is kind of like John Lennon feeling inadequate around Bob Dylan. it's the intense focus on class divisions and ultra selfawareness of where one fits into that that makes the uk nerds, while its that total lack of self-scrutiny and self-consciousness that makes the USA cool, even though the USA has a large nerd contingent too, and masses of super dorks. both domains are full of assholes, that goes without saying, but when it comes to a list of great music, gimme the USA's rockin' strummin freewheelerin melancholia over this handwringing post-industrial post-1984 English dystopian depressive shit

    Now seems like as good a time as any to thank John and co. for all their work in 2014. Up with tQ, it's essential.

    As for the list, I'll go back to it many times and hope as much of it as possible is available to stream on Rdio. That said, as much as I love The Bug's earlier work, I was greatly let down by much of Angels & Devils. Swap it out for Shabazz Palaces mebbe.

    Great list as usual with a killer top 20. Just now getting around to Gazelle Twin (thanks for the tip!) and Jenny Hval; both excellent on first listen. I still don't get the Quietus distaste for Ben Frost (one of my favorites of 2014) and I'm a bit surprised not to see Arca, Caribou, Vessel, especially Goat (?!) which I figured was a perennial Quietus favorite, but those are just observations—not complaints—and I have a LOT to check out on this list.     Bit surprised not see Total Control in the list - but then I would have to declare my conflict of living in Australia? There certainly are some peanuts out there!

    Chuffed to see Bohren here, one of my favourites from the year and haven't heard much about it elsewhere. That said, the rest of the list bar about 15 other albums is a mystery to me so lots of music to get stuck into. No one cares but some of my other favourites: Amen Dunes, A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Automat, Sun Kil Moon, King Creosote, The Hotelier, clipping, Fennesz.

The spread of albums come from more countries and more genres than ever before - and we know because we sat down and counted them afterwards… or, I did at least. And the average age of staff member at TQHQ is at it's youngest in our seven year history with half the staff being in their early 20s. What sort of music do you think is missing?

    I guess i was just making sweeping inaccurate generalisations then, apologies about this. I suppose I'm just trying to think my way in to why i often don't agree with these lists. It would seem silly for me to complain about specific things not being included like dean blunt, shabazz palaces, polar bear, ratking or iceage, although how something like east india youth with it's very familiar, safe electronic sound replaces any of those is beyond me.. As for your lack of a flying lotus review this year, i assume being based on some overly thought out philosophical reasoning, I just tend to get the feel that the reasonings for something either disliked or liked by the quietus comes from an overly analytical and over-described place which is often partly based on subconscious reactions against the slightly-more-mainstream alternative. Perhaps to be the point where if the quietus was around in the 70s, a lot of the main artists which are now referenced by you as THE shit, would be ignored or dismissed, since simply too much of an analytical, verbalised effort would be applied. The best music is music that exists to fill in a void of a lack of expression in any other form, including verbal expression. The best reviews for me simply attempt at describing the general picture and its reaction on them, not the kind of reviews you often do. Maybe this cuts it a bit deep, but that's my general gripe with the quietus. Sorry john :(

If you haven't got it by now you never will but in short - Shabazz Palaces: starts off amazing, if it had carried on like that I definitely would have voted for it but it slumps dramatically into the same turgid backpack hip hop that's been clogging everything up since 1997. Iceage - don't make me fucking laugh. You can't criticise us for picking safe music then get a cob on because we didn't pick some rubbish Drop Kick Murphies demo for inclusion, I hate the Pogues - I HATE THE FUCKING POGUES. Iceage were great when they were into Birthday Party and Joy Division. Now they are into the Pogues, so they are shit. Dean Blunt was pretty good but not outstanding. Fly LO? I liked this a lot but there has to be a little bit of consensus and everyone else hated it. And, dude, put down the fucking bong for five minutes… we're just four people running a massive, massive website, which in print terms is about ten times the size of the NME with barely any money. If we don't review something it's because we can't find a writer who wants to do it. No need to piss your fucking pants about it. It's not a 'philosophical' slight against you and your taste in music. The next bit of your post is literally gibberish. As for the 70s thing - we get this all the time - but, hey, guess what, we're not a paper in the 70s so we don't have to worry about it. I'm not writing The Rise And Fall Of The Roman Empire. This is a music magazine with current information and opinion. If people are still reading our pieces in 40 years time then more fool them. And 'cuts deep' - son, I don't give a fuck what you think. And more to the point, I don't care as long as you keep on clicking - which you undoubtedly will. Have a good weekend.

    I check in and out of The Quietus but I really enjoyed scrolling through your list. Because I don't listen to half as much music as you guys, I'm obviously surprised when records I thought were great (RTJ2, Benji, TVotR's new album is very underrated) don't show up on the list, but at the end of the day the whole point of a music site (especially one like this) surely isn't to just reaffirm popular stuff I already like but open up corners of music in 2014 that I didn't know were there. On a lot of these lists there's a few disclaimers that 2014 wasn't as great as 2013 for music but the overall impression I had was the same as yours - that this year was more abundant for great singles, remixes and albums than ever. The sheer amount of music being made available nowadays is both terrifying (am I missing out!?) and exhilirating and so I really welcome the end-of-year lists which kind of corral and throw a net around just a bit of all that great stuff. In short, keep it up, I'll see you again in 2015!

    Like lots of folks have said, it's a great resource for those of us curious to find interesting gems amid an internet full of boring lists that recycle the same artists and pander to their audiences expectations.

    Great list. Nevermind the resentful pricks. Thanks to you i discovered a few new artists I never heard of, were informed that Laibach and MSP put out new albums and pleased to see my fav artists like the Bug at the top 20. Cheers. If people have any issues with your taste or your own list, they should be reminded that they are free to make their own or just gtfo and jerk off to the NME or Pitchfork end of the year lists. Aight?

    Wow. This list is laughably predictable!! No unsigned or underground bands in sight. What makes an album an album? A fucking barcode?? lol There are a million amazing bands making albums and giving them away for free on Bandcamp these days but websites like this don't seem interested.

    This is a really wonderful list. Unlike with most of these best-of lists, I'm familiar only with a portion of the trees in this forest, and the ones I'm not familiar with are a welcome adventure to explore. Reminds one that beyond the usual filters there's a universe of creativity going on out there all the time. Thanks Quietus.

    I liked the diversity of your list. I used it to find some new and different music that I will explore further so thank you for that. So of course what I'm going to say will sound critical but it's not its just my own comment, opinion, for what it's worth. I'm very happy today, compared with when I was younger, there's an outlet for underground lists of "best of". Before the Internet, anything like that, in Canada where I am, was very underground in itself and hard to find. Anyway, war on drugs. I've seen these guys live a few times now going back to late 2011, and while it may not be your bag (fair enough), I do feel their music would warrant representation on your list. I think there's a place for well written songs and beautifully composed music even if all of a sudden they get called out for being "good" by some larger publications. Prior to that, they were pretty small, grinding it out. Leaving them off is a bit of a statement I'm not sure I like. That being said, I do appreciate your lack of hipster pretense (maybe) on your list. The fact there's some metal in there in whatever genre yiu wanna call makes me say thank you.
