Japanese cult icon Shintaro Sakamoto has kindly given us a first play of his new track, ‘Let’s Dance Raw’. The song serves as the lead single from his forthcoming record of the same name, due on September 15.
Set around a lackadaisical funk groove, ‘Lets Dance Raw’ is a departure from the intricate melodies of his 2012 basement record, How To Be A Phantom, and instead opts for an exotic, forthright texture. A blend of dense Brazilian percussion and 70s American staccato guitar, grounded by vocal harmonies in Japanese, sees Sakamoto poised between distinct cultures. This track, along with recent video ‘Birth Of The Super Cult’ (have a watch below), serves as another indication of Sakamoto moving away from the underground psychedelia of his former band, Yura Yura Teikoku, and entering unchartered territory.
