Before it comes out next week, Malka Spigel has kindly given us a first listen to her new EP Gliding. It’ll be released on Colin Newman of Wire’s swim~ label, and features Newman himself, both on guitar and taking up mixing duties, alongside band mate Matthew Simms, To Rococo Rot’s Ronald Lippok, Mambas’ Gil Luz and Uri Frost and Julie Campbell, aka LoneLady.
The record finds Spigel revisiting and rearranging tracks from her catalogue, taking a song each from her first three solo albums, Rosh Ballata, Hide and My Pet Fish, as well as ‘Tall Grey Buildings’ from the Swim Team # 1 compilation, a process inspired by the live renderings of the tracks in her 2012 tour of France and Israel. The result is a four-tracker with a knowingly accurate title: shoegaze with its abrasion bevelled off, washes and spasms of guitar and choral synth with Spigel’s mesmeric vocals and rolling, driving bass at the centre. Watch the video for ‘Tall Grey Buildings’ below and get hold of it over at swim~’s site upon release.
