Masterful work on new single, '2013'

When the Quietus went to interview Andrew Weatherall about his Asphodells project the other week, we did so in his excellent studio, deep in the basement of an East London block. There, in a fug of weed smoke and interesting literature, does Mr Weatherall perform his musical magic. As all well know, the first time he came to mass attention for this was via his work with Screamadelica-era Primal Scream, and now he’s back with Bobby G and co for this cosmic reworking of new track ‘2013’, from their album More Light out on May 13 on 1st International, with some fine fine saxophone and a typically "is the sun coming up or have the poppers just made my eyes go weird?" groove. Killer stuff.

Bet Bobby Gillespie wishes the original sounded like this rather than the crap he's been chucking out for the past 10 years

The original is very good - so good that it's hardly recognisable as Primal Scream in fact

Let's face it - Primal Scream are only as good as whoever is producing or remixing them. Leave them alone in a studio and the best they would come up with is a Count Five cover.

I can't think of a band whose output divides my opinion so much: I'll stand by Screamadelica, Vanishing Point and XTRMNTR all day long, whereas the rest of their 'Stonesy' output is rotten to say the least. '2013' is a miserable experience and their last two albums are two of the worst things I've EVER heard (Country Girl anyone?)... this however isn't bad at all...

Sounds like they've been listening to a few old Death In Vegas 12"s - not a bad move!
