Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965-68
CF: Nuggets is a record we got when I was in art school. We loved those kind of cheesy garage songs, but we elevated them to a very high place. We felt that those songs were just as important as the more serious music. We had a little band, David Byrne and I, called The Artistics. Tina was our friend but not in the band. Most of our songs were covers, some of them were from Nuggets like ‘Too Much To Dream Last Night’, ‘Lies’ by the Knickerbockerss and ‘Psychotic Reaction’.

I would read the liner notes when I bought records and I saw that Lenny Kaye compiled this. When we moved to New York he was one of the first musicians that we met. We had an instant rapport with him because we loved nuggets and we were very excited by the work he was doing with Patti Smith. At that time there was no band per say, there was Patti doing her thing with Lenny accompanying her on his guitar. Those were the early days of CBGB, which tied right into the whole Nuggets compilation. CBGB was like Nuggets come to life.
