This Weekend: Morphosis In London

An impressive line-up at Corsica Studios this Saturday, pairing Morphine boss with Objekt, Container, John Heckle & more

This weekend, BleeD Music are bringing a mighty line-up to London’s Corsica Studios, headed up by Morphosis, Berlin-based DJ/musician and head of the Morphine label. It takes place on Saturday 20th April, and finds him joined by a number of other names from that current space where techno and house collide with noise and more experimental practices: John Heckle, Container, Rene Hell, NHK’Koyxen and Objekt.

Morphosis is among the most exciting artists currently working in techno, having gradually carved out a distinctive niche for himself over the past few years under the Morphosis name and as Ra.H. He uses hardware-based improvisation to create long, gradually unfolding grooves pockmarked with distortion and flecked with melodies rooted in Middle Eastern music. His DJ sets are equally exploratory, drawing equally for more regularly structured dancefloor fare and all manner of other things – listen to last year’s mix for mnml ssgs for some idea of what to expect. He’ll be playing a three hour set on the night.

Hessle Audio signee Objekt, aka Berlin-based TJ Hertz, who makes exquisitely strange and broken techno, will also be playing for three hours. Then there’s purveyor of hardcore hardware-based cave rave techno/noise Container; and Kouhei Matsunaga under his NHK’Koyxen guise, whose two Dance Classics records on PAN last year cast techno and hip-hop as fractured digital funk.

The line-up is completed by Liverpool’s creator of scuzzily cosmic house John Heckle (click here to read a recent interview with Heckle on the Quietus) and Stateside noise artist Jeff Witscher, aka Rene Hell, who has released a string of records through labels like Type, and most recently worked on a split record with Oneohtrix Point Never.

BleeD’s Casper Clark took over the airwaves on London station Rinse FM last Saturday, inviting tQ’s Rory Gibb along to the studio to play some music of a similar persuasion to the artists named above, as well as playing a 40-minute guest mix from Lee Gamble. Listen and download the radio session via the embed below, featuring music from Hieroglyphic Being, John Heckle, Chris Carter, Container, Lumigraph, Ekoplekz & Mordant Music, Rene Hell, Juju & Jordash, Mark Fell & more.
