Team Ghost, the French five-piece band whose principal songwriter is former M83 member Nicolas Fromageau, are set to release their new EP Curtains on February 25th. It’s the follow-up to last year’s Dead Film Star EP and arrives in advance of the group’s debut full-length proper Rituals, which is due on March 18th via French label wSphere. Anyone expecting something approaching the delicate electronic pop of Fromageau’s alma mater, however, will be confronted with something rather different: the EP’s title track is a spooked and wiry affair, its trebly guitar stabs cutting slashes through the surrounding synthetic ambience.
"Well, first I wanted to do a typical Joy Division song, actually, very hypnotic, then I thought, ‘Fuck off, let’s do some dissonance with guitars,’" said Fromageau in an interview with the Quietus to be published in the near future. "I wanted it to sound like Thurston jamming with Peter Hook. Then we added some electronic parts…" You can listen to ‘Curtains’ via the embed below.
We’re promised that ‘Curtains’ provides a decent taster of what to expect from the EP and their forthcoming full-length: "a combination of the atmospheric synth textures of Tangerine Dream and Brian Eno, and the caustic indie-rock of Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine," says the text accompanying the EP’s release. Curtains will contain two other original tracks and a club remix by Canblaster. Keep an eye on the Quietus in the coming weeks for a full interview with Team Ghost.
