LISTEN: New Blur Songs!
The Quietus , July 2nd, 2012 15:55

Bonkers new direction!

So there we were thinking that Blur were going to play one more big gig for the London Olympics then clear off forever, their relationship seemingly dissolved into acrimony. But no! This evening, the band premiered two new songs online. And blimey, they're quite odd. 'The Puritan' (above) is a weird, lo-fi electronics thing, quite Essex-boy Gruff Rhys, if you will. One third of the Quietus office thinks it's pretty great, until the staple Blur 'lalalala' crap comes in at the end. 'Under The Westway', meanwhile, has been aired in acoustic form before, but the version you can hear below is a lot fuller. One Friend Of The Quietus said on Twitter that it sounds like "Coldplay covering 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'". What do you reckon? There's a bit of 'Let It Be' in there... AND HE'S SINGING ABOUT PETROL??! Has Brett won?!? Anyway, it's a typical lighters aloft Blur ballad. Expect it to feature live on BBC 3 during that Olympic thing, with Fearne Cotton coming on right after going "awww wasn't that lovely?"
