There are some afternoons – Mondays, many of them – when only industrial-grade will do. For those afternoons, there’s Dead Fader. Since 2010’s Corrupt My Examiner, the duo of Barry Prendergast and John Cohen – now Cohen working solo – have carved a singular niche somewhere between the more remorseless end of dubstep and the post-Dilla hip hop innovations of FlyLo et al. Except with much, much more distortion heaped on top. We spoke to the Berlin-based Cohen shortly after the release of last year’s Luckeeey EP on Tigerbeat6. He’s now returned with another EP, work it, no, which features the usual mixture of razor-edged hip hop and dubstep, pumped up and overdriven to a mind-numbing extent. It’s due out on Robot Elephant on 20th July.
We’re pleased (and a little bit scared) to premier the outstanding ‘Fishsh’, a cut from the EP featuring the distinctive sloped verses of Sensational. That bassline, snarling low under the MC’s parched, distorted flow, is menacing enough – just wait ‘til the halfway point when all hell breaks loose. Dead Fader will also be performing live along with Cindytalk and Necro Deathmort at Dalston’s Power Lunches on 6th July – tickets here.
