On 16th July, Colombia’s Ondatrópica – an all-star band consisting of several legends of Colombian music, plus a number of new, younger musicans – release their album Ondatrópica through Soundway Records. Assembled by Mario Galeano (of Frente Cumbiero) and Will Holland (aka Quantic), the band mixes together elements of a number of different Colombian musics (cumbia, porro, gaita, champeta) with influences from around the world, including healthy dollops of dub and hip-hop. The band’s aim was to do exactly that: "re-interpret the tropical musical heritage of Colombia with new approaches in composition, arrangement and production in a classic and mythical setting."
In advance of the album’s release, the first single, ‘I Ron Man’, is released this coming Monday. As its name suggests, it’s a take on Black Sabbath’s seminal track. In Galeano’s words: "This is a drunken version of Black Sabbath´s classic tune, wherein Colombia and the UK drink a toast of rum (ron) and whisky to celebrate the world’s common interest in inebriation." We couldn’t have put it better ourselves. Listen to the track via the embed below, and you can find out more information about the record at the Soundway website.
