“It’s always good to do these lists I find, because it really gives me a good insight into where I’ve been with music, and where I am going with it; it’s a great reminder of where my inspirations and influences have come from.”
Alexander Tucker is softly spoken yet enthusiastic when discussing the music that has (and continues to) inspire his work. There are some surprises on his list such as the playful alt-rock of R.E.M. – which is, on the surface, a far cry from the experimental folk structures presented on his latest album Third Mouth.
By contrast, the energy of Bardo Pond’s heavy guitars and soothing vocals, alongside Alistair Galbraith’s intense and challenging work on Orb push to the fore. “I’m never really aware of how something another artist has done has the potential to influence me. I’m just listening to it, and then something [in the music] will hit me when I least expect it. Often, if I’m out for a walk, I can get a flood of ideas from what I am listening to. It’s never direct though, and I won’t set out to do something based on what I’ve heard.”
