'Car Song' now on the Quietus

As Nicola Meighan discovered in her brilliant feature with RM Hubbert earlier this year, his return has been a strange and wonderful journey, which is perhaps reflected in the great new video for 'Car Song', premiered above. In it our protagonist wanders through the Scottish landscape, before being dragged by a lead through woodland and onto rocks by the sea, where a lady awaits, holding a guitar.

In 'Car Song' Hubbert's guitar-playing sits beneath lyrics and vocals by Aidan Moffat about memory ("I made my last attempt at smoking on that swing bridege with Gillian Smith... we all loved Gillian") and a desire to escape from the plasticity of modern life. We rather like the way Chemikal Underground describe the track as "RM Hubbert and Aidan Moffat sort of being driven around by melodica tooting chauffeur Alex Kapranos". Anyway, more importantly, what happens to the guitar? An open mic night in a bijou coffee house? Or something more sinister? Watch above to find out. 'Car Song' is released via Chemikal Underground on April 30th 2012, and is back with 'Mo Ve'la Bella Mia de la Muntagna', an Italian folk song sung by Alasdair Roberts and Emma Pollock. Go buy it here. You can catch RM Hubbert live at the following dates in May:

2nd – London, Gallery Café Chapel
3rd – Cambridge, Portland Arms
4th – Nottingham, Chameleon (Supporting Papier Tigre)
5th – Manchester, Night & Day (Supporting Papier Tigre)
8th Liverpool, Mello Mello
12th– Derby, Holy Smokes Festival

I totally loved the guitar parts of “Car Song” though I agree with O’Brien that I could barely make out the words he was singing. Looking forward to watching them live and hopefully the diction will be better.
