MIA: Twattish Riot Tweets Shocker
Luke Turner , August 8th, 2011 16:54

Clearly gunning to out-bellend Morrissey

Add your comment »

The Quietus has spent most of this evening slightly nervous at the gangs of pissed young kids rampaging around outside our house, destroying local businesses and cars in our neighbourhood, ripping up bits of pavement and throwing them at the police. It is, frankly, Not Very Nice. Yet multi-millionaire mango-peppering Colonel Gaddafi-admiring pop twit MIA seems to think the whole thing is a right hoot. The Prodigious Bellend has gone on Twitter to stick her oar in, writing: "@MIA im going down to the riots to hand out tea and mars bars #london" "have you been to enfield" and "people in tottenham mcdonalds are making their own food #LondonRiots". Does anyone know if Morrissey managed anything worse at his gig tonight?

How does this add anything to the conversation? You're not even daring to discuss why someone might support the riots. I guess because she's wealthy now, that's a convenient reason to dismiss her politics. I don't even give a shit about MIA, but this is just cowardly when it comes to the larger question of why people are rioting.

If people are rioting to protest police brutality, corruption and murder, why so quick to dismiss their supporters? Maybe MIA knows from her time living in London that the police are unbelievably corrupt?

You sir (or madame), are a f**king idiot - and I very much doubt you would be saying the same thing if you were, as I am, sat in a flat in Peckham. I mean, seriously, there is NO WAY you can support these riots. I don't argue that there aren't huge societal problems that have undoubtedly gone some way to instigating the nights violence, but looting and attempting to torch the Iceland on Peckham high St, or setting fire to an independently run card shop whilst the owners are in the flat upstairs has f**k all to do with "unbelievably corrupt" police. Frankly, the fact that MIA feels the need to publicly make light of the situation by offering to provide these human scum with "tea and Mars bars" is abhorrent.

*That should read 'sub-human scum', obviously.

In reply to A:

I don't think the cause of the riots is the imperative thing to a lot of people any more. It's the level of violence with which they are being carried out. I don't fully understand the politics of the situation, but if the people are angry then they have the right to protest peacefully. However going to such extreme lengths can never be advocated. I take it they're doing it because they want to draw attention to the issue? The only attention they're getting from me and probably the majority of other people is what bastards they are. A lot of them are probably just thugs on the edge of the lower levels of society who just want to fuck shit up, as was the case in the student riots. I mean, did you not see the images on the news of that furniture store on fire? Those people have lost everything... How can you support that?

In reply to jack:

How exactly do these tweets reveal anything meaningful about what MIA thinks about the riots? She writes 3 sentences, you write a paragraph? This is what you call journalism? If you want to pronounce opinions about other people's political opinions and actions then stop pussy footing around under the guise of disengaged cultural critics and express yourself. What does THE QUIETUS have to contribute to the discourse?

In reply to Toby:

Yes I was thinking the very same thing having tried to get to my house last night in Hackney, having my phone robbed out of my hand, being verbally abused, threatened and intimidated, followed by local yoof who concealed their faces with scarves, I was just trying to get home. Once home it did not improve with riot police being taunted and having all manner of objects thrown at them, I am not a big police fan, but I was the one being intimidated and abused last night, it was lawlessness coupled with an exaggerated sense of entitlement. MIA is a fucking twat. Just because she has lived through civil unrest does not mean she got this right, she didn't. It was appalling last night. I am a working class woman, I have worked hard all my life and I was terrified in my own home with fires being set feet away from my house, all the local businesses being destroyed (and these are not big corporate concerns just local businesses). So let's not glamorize this, there was no congruent political point being made here. Which is a great shame.

In reply to andyou?:

What? That's on a completely different tangent from what I was saying. I was arguing that in my opinion it is immoral to support the riots. Also, for the record, it's pretty obvious that MIA is in support of the riots from what she has said. You're really telling me that you can't see that?
Also, I'm not a journalist, so don't spout random abuse at me when actually you know nothing about me.

- this is nothing to do with police brutality -
- this is not a protest -
- its a bunch of dumb animals rampaging over innocent people creating fear and misery -
- wake the fuck up you morons who sympasise with the looters -
- when your door is kicked in, you are robbed and you house is burned down, you will be begging the police to help you againt these animals -

and for the record M.i.a - you are a sanctimonious twat and a cancer to society - try using your position to calm this shit down instead of flaming it -
i hope none of your friends or family in london get robbed or burned down

One thing i discovered last night after calling out MIA on some of the tweets I found insulting both to myself as a native south londoner and those who have lost everything to the looters and arsonists, is the sheer idiocy of some of her 'tru fanz' who told me and others with similar views to "shut the f*ck up" and "if you are not a fan get off her page". I was called a lot of nasty names and a "hater".

If you are a true fan and have listened to her from day one (as I had, but not any more after last night) you should know that she advocates calling out your 'leaders' if you disagree with them not just blindly worshipping at their feet and hanging on every word they say. If MIA is your 'leader' and 'speaks from the streets' (but I mean come on, she speaks from the streets now as much as anyone in the government as far as I'm concerned, she doesn't have to suffer anymore unlike the people who went through hell last night), but suddenly comes up with nonsense like handing out tea and mar bars to rioters then you should have the right to disagree.

Even if you don't understand someone else's anger at MIA you should not not seek to censor them and try to shut them up, or tell them to leave. I always thought MIA was about freedom of speech, which some of her fans have clearly missed the point about.

Feel more than welcome to bring this stuff up next time she's promoting one of her cruddy records, Quietus...

MIA is just trying to be a provocative political outsider without the inconvenience of understanding the situation enough to analyze it. Which is typical for her. When you really look at her she isn't much more than a bunch of bold positions and fashionable platitudes.

Thing is at least Mozzer's statements were covered by the media all around the world. Even Vegan Digest and Cat Channel wrote about it. M.I.A. on the other hand... it's been 5 or 6 days since she tweeted that and this is the first time I've read of this, from Quietus of all sites. I only clicked on it because I thought Miami International Airport was capable of silly riot tweets.
