Poly Styrene RIP

Singer dies aged 53

Former X-Ray Spex singer Poly Styrene has passed away aged 53. Poly – real name Marian Joan Elliott-Said – was diagnosed with cancer in February, but still released the solo album Generation Indigo in March this year. Earlier this month, on April 17, she posted on Twitter saying: "Slowly slowly trying 2 get better miss my walk along the promenade. Would b so nice 2 sing again & play #GenerationIndigo live. Luv Poly X" This morning a tweet confirmed the sad news that Poly Styrene had died: "We can confirm that the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening to go to higher places. PSTeam."

The Quietus was lucky enough to speak to Poly earlier this year, and you can read our interview here. Our friend and colleague, John Robb, has also penned a lovely tribute over at Louder Than War.

The Quietus’s thoughts are with Poly and her friends and family at this time.
