Un Chien Andalou

Your film studies professor will probably tell you that the cutting of the woman's eye with a straight razor at the begining of Un Chien Andalou symbolises the filmmakers' rejection of the oppressive conventions of narrative cinema. That, or maybe they're just trying to get your attention. It's such a harrowing thing to watch that you completely ignore the fact that it is clearly a cow's eye still attached to a cows head. Throughout his filmmaking career, Louis Bunuel continued to deliver on the promise of this gesture by fucking with his audience at every turn, while Dali went on to make and remake the same trite dreamscape that spawned a thousand fridge magnets.
