German cultural organisation The Goethe-Institut has published a new book that looks in-depth at the nightlife history of a number of major cities in Africa and Europe.

Ten Cities: Clubbing in Nairobi, Cairo, Kyiv, Johannesburg, Berlin, Naples, Luanda, Lagos, Bristol, Lisbon. 1960-March 2020 comprises 21 essays by 25 writers, covering music journalists, musicologists, record collectors, historians and more. Writers based in each city have been enlisted to look back over the last 60 years of nightlife history in penning their essays.

In addition to the essays, the book is also illustrated by photography from the featured cities' different scenes.

Ten Cities' three editors – Johannes Hossfeld Etyang, Joyce Nyairo and Florian Sievers – began the book as a research project between their respective bases of Nairobi and Berlin in 2010, with it later morphing into a compilation, Ten Cities, which came out on Soundway in 2014. That release saw them invite around 50 artists based in countries across Africa and Europe to collaborate with each other.
