Rupert Till adopts the moniker ‘Professor Chill’ for a new ancient instruments album

Dr Rupert Till, professor of music at the University of Huddersfield, is set to release a new album.

Dub Archaeology will feature performances on reconstructed ancient instruments drawn from indie label Delphian's releases, a collection of recordings Till was involved in producing for the European Music Archaeology Project. The instruments include Palaeolithic bone flutes, giant Celtic horns and gut-string lyres.

The album pairs the instruments — some of which were, of course, recorded in caves — with ambient electronic and electronic music as well as “leftfield dub techno and world influences.” You can listen to the single ‘Isturitz’ above.

Dub Archaeology is out 3 August on Twin Records. You can read a Quietus article on the modern uses of ancient instruments here.
